There’s a harmful pesticide present in almost all the foods we eat, and there’s residue of it in a variety of oat products, including plain and flavored oats as well. The data was released by the FDA at a meeting in Florida. The results showed that there’s a significant amount of the chemical known as glyphosate in a big number of instant oats brands, including the banana-strawberry type.
Glyphosate was also found in the popular “Cinnamon spice” oatmeal, as well as in the “Maple brown sugar” variety. The research found 1.67 ppm (parts per million) of glyphosate in the tested oatmeal products, while the organic oats contained none.
Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Monsanto’s popular RoundUp herbicide, the most common weed killer in the world. In 2015, a team of experts classified glyphosate as a known carcinogen after linking it to several types of cancer. The Environmental Protection Agency considers glyphosate safe for human consumption and has determined safe levels of the chemical in food at 30 ppm, while in Europe the bar is set lower at 20 ppm.
Monsanto’s was the driving force behind the creation of the guideline levels for glyphosate in food. The agricultural giant has even developed several crops that can endure being sprayed with glyphosate. Oats aren’t a GMO crop, but they are sprayed with RoundUp before the harvest according to a guide set by Monsanto. The company says that this pre-harvest strategy is great for weed control and can control perennial weeds easily while facilitating early harvest management.
Canada is the leading producer of oats in the world, and supplies most of the USA with the crop. In its Canadian marketing material, Monsanto claims that spraying the crops with RoundUp is beneficial and considers their GMO crops safe for human consumption. However, the high number of cases linking glyphosate with cancer and other serious diseases paints a different picture, and is definitely cause for concern.
